Recap: Earth Day at MKThink: Why is Earth a Critical Place?

Last night, as part of San Francisco Climate Week, MKThink hosted a dynamic and thought-provoking Earth Day event titled “Why is Earth a Critical Place? Explore How Accurate Data Systems Create Sustainable Solutions.” Set against the backdrop of our mission to foster smarter, more resilient places, the event welcomed a passionate crowd eager to deepen their relationship with the planet through technology, insight, and community.

Bringing Data to Life

The evening centered on the powerful role that data and spatial intelligence play in our environmental decision-making. As we unpacked the often-invisible layers of our surroundings, we saw how data-driven tools can illuminate our behaviors, enhance safety, reduce energy consumption, and support sustainable systems from the individual to the ecosystem scale.

A Panel of Visionaries

We were honored to host a truly diverse and inspiring panel of experts who each brought their own unique lens to the conversation:

  • Joe Fitting, a lifelong naturalist and retired Deputy Director of the San Francisco Zoo, reminded us of the irreplaceable connection between people and nature, and how data can be used to protect biodiversity.

  • Peter Yolles, Managing Partner at Echo River Capital, discussed how environmental innovation is scaling through strategic investment in clean tech and sustainability startups.

  • Tomas Aftalion, Co-founder of Pachama, shared how satellite imagery and AI are revolutionizing forest conservation and climate solutions.

  • Emilio Goldenhersch, MKThink’s Enterprise Director and a psychologist by training, explored how behavioral science intersects with place-based data to encourage sustainable habits.

Their energy, insight, and passion turned the evening into more than a panel, it was a call to action. We thank them deeply for sharing their wisdom and challenging us to think more critically and creatively about how we interact with our environment.

Curious Minds, Big Ideas

The event also sparked lively dialogue among guests, whose curiosity and commitment to positive change energized the room. From spontaneous questions during the Q&A to deep-dive discussions during the reception, it was clear that our community shares a profound concern for Earth and a desire to act wisely on its behalf.

A Shared Commitment

More than anything, the night was a heartfelt reminder of the passion so many of us hold for our planet, and how emerging technologies, when used thoughtfully, can become powerful tools for accountability and stewardship.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, participated, and contributed to a memorable Earth Day. As we continue this important work, we remain committed to building a future where places and people thrive together, driven by data, informed by empathy, and inspired by the planet we all call home.

Take a moment everyday to step outside, connect with nature, and nurture the relationship that benefits both our well-being and the health of the planet in countless ways.
