Earl Warren Showgrounds: Master Plan
Transforming Underused Showgrounds into a Community Campus
ABSTRACT
For generations, the Earl Warren Showgrounds has been part of Santa Barbara’s story, from rodeos and fairs to school performances and community gatherings. As facilities aged and needs evolved, the Showgrounds risked losing its place at the civic heart. In partnership with MKThink, a steering committee of educators, equestrians, cultural leaders, and neighbors reimagined its future. The focus was not only what the Showgrounds could hold, but who it could serve. The resulting Master Plan transforms 33.9 acres into a flexible, multi-use campus anchored by a new 6,000-seat arena, equestrian facilities, community halls, and open green space. The plan enables a 3.5× increase in annual use hours, supports 11 adaptable facility types, and unfolds in 4 additive phases to ensure continuity and long-term sustainability. More than redevelopment, this is a vision of shared identity, a place where Santa Barbara’s history meets its future. Designed for equity, resilience, sustainability, and economic vitality, the reimagined Showgrounds strengthens community connection and ensures this landmark continues to serve for generations to come.
