Detailed facility requirements for the academic and support service programs operating in Berkeley Unified School District
The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) commissioned MKThink to develop standards and guidelines for all school facilities and to assess the district’s classroom capacity at the TK-5 level. These standards provide a framework for the operation, renovation, and construction of various space types. The objective of the Design Guidelines and Education Specifications is to bolster BUSD’s Mission and Vision and create the highest quality learning environments that support the district’s diverse student body and a range of teaching pedagogies. Working groups consisting of BUSD teachers, staff, and administrators contributed to content development for this document by discussing topics, trends, and pressing issues for academic facilities.

APPROACH
​Engage BUSD teachers, staff, and administrators to create standards that provide a framework for the operation, renovation, and construction of various space types to produce the highest quality learning environments that support the district’s diverse student body and a range of teaching pedagogies.

Developed standards and guidelines for all school facilities and conducted an assessment of the District's classroom capacity at the TK-5 level.
