The Nature Conservancy
CALIFORNIA CHAPTER HEADQUARTERS
Flagship offices that manifest the mission of conservation
The San Francisco headquarters of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is the flagship of the California Chapter’s strategy to streamline its statewide operational footprint. The project team conducted an in-depth workplace study that measured utilization and occupancy and surveyed staff. Findings revealed that 60% of workstations go unused day–to–day. MKThink’s devised a solution that paired architectural design with organizational protocol. An open office layout eliminated assigned offices in favor of shared resources and reservable workstations for a 33% reduction in square footage. Avoiding annual lease expenses of $250,000, the Chapter maintained its location close to partners and public transit. The design aesthetic pays homage to TNC’s work in the state with a color palette inspired by natural elements and the use of local and sustainable materials.
