Town School For Boys
BUILDING AS A TEACHING TOOL
Unearthing space for expansion to transform a 50-year old school into an active teaching tool
Town School for Boys is a K-8 independent school with a long-standing tradition of educating San Francisco boys. The school was in need of renovation and more space to further its academic programs. Its location in an exclusive residential neighborhood presented major obstacles to expansion. MKThink identified the opportunity to expand the school below ground by excavating 175,000 CF of material—an architectural solution that added 20,302 SF of capacity while avoiding the expense of acquiring any new land. Reconfiguring the interior layout and reprogramming the schedule captured the equivalent of 12,000 SF.
