Project Description

Hawai’i Department of Education

Sustainable solutions to cool Hawaii’s 290 public schools.

MKThink needed to develop cost-effective, sustainable strategies to cool the 7,500 (63%) HIDOE classrooms without air conditioning.

MKThink designed a solar-powered air conditioning system and sustainable cooling solutions, tailored to island microclimates. Solutions were informed by a multi-year study of classroom climate conditions in 62 schools on 4 islands.

MKThink’s sustainable cooling solutions mitigate the $1.7 billion cost to install air conditioning and avoid increases to the $50 million yearly electricity bill. They will increase the number of classrooms that can be cooled with the $100 million appropriated in 2016 for district-wide heat abatement
